Founder and Editor

Kathy Wise

Thirty years ago, Kathy Wise learned to play mahjong from a friend's Jewish grandmother while she was a law student at The Ohio State University (Go Bucks!). She spent a decade as a litigator before deciding to pursue her original passion, magazines. After becoming the top editor of C&I, a national luxury lifestyle publication based in Dallas, she joined D Magazine in 2016, where she currently serves as editorial director. Under her leadership, the magazine has won numerous national awards, including CRMA awards for General Excellence and Excellence in Writing. Kathy has personally won a CRMA Award for reporting for “The Most Lawless County in Texas,” a feature about a Collin County judge who was convicted of a crime she didn’t commit, and a Folio Award for “The Rogue Shepherd,” a profile of Bonton Farms founder Daron Babcock. Inspired by the recent resurgence of mahjong, she decided to found a new national publication dedicated to the game she loves. When Marshall McKinney agreed to come on board as the creative director, she knew they were about to create something remarkable.

Creative Director

Marshall McKinney

Marshall McKinney cut his teeth in trade journals before earning a masters degree in journalism from Ole Miss (Hotty Toddy!). Upon graduation, he moved west to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he landed in the art department forOutside magazine, a three-time ASME National Magazine Award Winner for General Excellence. From there, he refined his craft at a number of national magazines before finally settling down in Charleston, South Carolina, to help launch Garden & Gun alongside editor-in-chief Sid Evans. Under his 16-year leadership, the brand went on to amass much critical acclaim, including two ASME National Magazine Awards for General Excellence.

Mähj is a magazine that celebrates the CULTURE, STRATEGY, and STYLE of a timeless game. At its core, it's about CONNECTIONS. Playing on the game's concepts of seasons and winds, each issue emphasizes seasonality and SENSE OF PLACE, exploring mahjong in all its forms, everywhere it is played, from Dallas to NYC.
